Spotlight On: Hilda Figueroa (Leer en español)

In her nearly three decades working in the housekeeping department, Hilda Figueroa has been known to light up any room she walks into at Saratoga Family Residence in Jamaica, Queens.

It’s a quality that other staff at Saratoga have come to cherish, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, when many struggled to cope with additional stress on their work, families, and their physical and mental health.

“We’ve gone through a lot, including losing loved ones,” said Lawrence Norftil, director of facilities at Saratoga. “To have her come in with that smile on her face—it’s a great feeling to have somebody on your team like that.”

For Figueroa, the pandemic was challenging, too. As a member of the cleaning staff, her work—which has always been essential to maintaining the health and safety of staff and residents—took on an additional and unprecedented urgency.

At the height of the pandemic, she remembers worrying about contracting the virus during her commute from Brooklyn Queens and Manhattan, where she offered critical sanitation support to reduce the risk of infection for staff.

“It isn’t easy to work during a pandemic. I would take the train and bus—afraid to get infected,” she said. “You never knew who had the virus, so you had to do things to protect yourself.”

Things have since improved, and according to Norftil, Saratoga has been able to maintain low COVID-19 case rates, even during the omicron surge in New York City, thanks in large part to the work of Figueroa, who often acts as a kind of mentor to other cleaners.

“I can count on her for anything,” said Norftil, who often assigns new cleaning staff to train with FIgueroa when they join the team.

Figueroa first moved to New York City from Puerto Rico in 1983. She started working at Saratoga 29 years ago, after years spent caring for her four children at home. She quickly gained a reputation at the facility for her hard work, friendliness, and meticulous attention to detail.

“When I first began here, I had a lot of coworkers who’ve since retired,” said Figueroa, who’s still friends with many of the coworkers she met during her first years at HFH.

In the years since, she’s continued to establish strong bonds with other staff members at Saratoga, taking the time to get to know each new member of the cleaning team.

“I love my job,” said Figueroa. “We’re like a family and we’re always helping each other.”

It’s those opportunities to help others that most motivates Figueroa in her work—from supporting other staff, to helping residents feel safe and comfortable at Saratoga.

“Sometimes, people get here and they don’t speak English, so they’ll ask me things,” she said. “I help them because they’re good people, too.”

When she isn’t working, Figueroa likes to listen to music—especially salsa and bachata—or spend time with her children and grandchildren.

As for retirement? She thinks she’d eventually like to move someplace a little warmer. Two of her children live in Florida now, and she especially loves the weather and calm atmosphere in Tampa.

“When I leave Saratoga one day, maybe I’ll move to be with my children,” she said. “Someday, but not yet.”

En sus casi tres décadas trabajando en el departamento de limpieza, Hilda Figueroa ha sido conocida por iluminar cualquier habitación que entra en Saratoga Family Residence en Jamaica, Queens.

Es una cualidad que otros empleados de Saratoga han llegado a apreciar, especialmente en medio de la pandemia de COVID-19, cuando muchos lucharon para hacer frente al estrés adicional en su trabajo, families y su salud física y mental.

“Hemos pasado por mucho, incluyendo la pérdida de seres queridos”, dijo Lawrence Norftil, director de instalaciones en Saratoga. “Cuando ella viene con esa sonrisa—es una gran sensación tener a alguien en tu equipo así.”

Para Figueroa, la pandemia también fue un desafío. Como miembro del personal de limpieza, su trabajo, que siempre ha sido esencial para mantener la salud y la seguridad del personal y los residentes, asumió una urgencia adicional y sin precedentes.

En el momento álgido de la pandemia, recuerda que le preocupaba contraer el virus durante su viaje desde Brooklyn a Queens y Manhattan, donde ofreció sanitario crítico para reducir el riesgo de infección para el personal.

“No es fácil trabajar durante una pandemia—tomaría el tren y el autobús con miedo de infectarme”, dijo. “Nunca supiste quién tenía el virus, así que tenías que hacer cosas para protegerte.”

Las cosas han mejorado desde entonces, y según Norftil, Saratoga ha sido capaz de mantener bajas tasas de casos de COVID-19, incluso durante el aumento del variante ómicron en la ciudad, gracias en gran parte al trabajo de Figueroa, que a menuda actúa como una clase de mentor para otros limpiadores.

“Puedo contar con ella para cualquier cosa”, dijo Norftil, quien a menudo asigna nuevo personal de limpieza para entrenar con Figueroa cuando se unen al equipo.

Figueroa se mudó a Nueva York desde Puerto Rico en 1983. Comenzó a trabajar en Saratoga hace 29 años, después de haber pasado años cuidando a sus cuatro hijos en casa. Rápidamente se ganó una reputación por su arduo trabajo, amabilidad y meticulosa atención al detalle.

“Cuando empecé aquí, tenía muchos compañeros de trabajo que ya se habían jubilado”, dijo Figueroa, quien todavía es amiga de muchos de los compañeros de trabajo que concoió durante sus primeros años en HFH.

Desde entonces, ha seguido estableciaendo fuertes vínculos con otros miembros del personal de Saratoga, dedicándose tiempo a conocer a cada nuevo miembro del equipo de limpieza.

“Me encanta mi trabajo”, dijo Figueroa. “Somos como una familia y siempre nos ayudamos unos a otros.”

Son esas oportunidades de ayudar a otros las que más motivan a FIgueroa en su trabajo, desde apoyar a otro personal, hasta ayudar a los residentes a sentirse seguros y cómodos en Saratoga.

“A veces, la gente llega aquí y no habla inglés, así que me preguntarían cosas”, dijo. “Los ayudo porque también son buenas personas.”

Cuando no está trabajando, a Figueroa le gusta escuchar música—especialmente salsa y bachata—o pasar tiempo con sus hijos y nietos.

¿En cuanto a la jubilación? Ella piensa que con el tiempo le gustaría mudarse a un lugar un poco más cálido. Dos de sus hijos viven en Florida ahora, y ella ama especialmente el clima y la atmósfera tranquila en Tampa.

“Cuando me vaya de Saratoga algún día, quizzás me mude para estar con mis hijos”, dijo. “Algún día, pero todavía no.”
